The Big Four

Not all grades are created equal. The company whose label sits on your slab has a direct impact on resale value, collector trust, and market liquidity. Here is a quick overview of the four companies you will encounter most.

PSA graded card slab

PSA: Professional Sports Authenticator

PSA is the most recognized name in card grading. A PSA 10 commands the highest premiums of any grader on the market. Their numeric scale runs 1 to 10, with half grades reserved for certain cases. Turnaround times vary widely by service tier, from a few days to several months.

BGS graded card slab with sub-grades

BGS: Beckett Grading Services

Beckett is known for its sub-grade system, showing scores for centering, corners, edges, and surface individually alongside the overall grade. A BGS 9.5 Black Label (all sub-grades 9.5+) is one of the most coveted designations in the hobby. Their slabs use a distinct black and gold design.

CGC graded card slab

CGC: Certified Guaranty Company

CGC expanded from comics into trading cards and has grown rapidly. Their slabs feature a tamper-evident holder and a clean label design. CGC Pristine 10 is their top tier. They are often praised for faster turnaround times compared to PSA at similar price points.

TAG graded card slab

TAG: Technical Authentication & Grading

TAG is a newer entrant to the market gaining traction with modern collectors. They offer competitive pricing and have built a reputation for consistent grading standards. Their labels include a QR code for easy verification and their slabs have a premium feel.
